Minoxidil Foam

When treating male and female pattern hair loss with minoxidil (Rogaine®), there are two forms available -- a liquid solution and a foam. Minoxidil has special formulations for men and women. For example, the 5% foam should only be used in men; using this particular minoxidil product in women may cause unwanted facial hair. To help prevent this side effect, women should only use minoxidil 2% solution.

Minoxidil foam only comes in the 5% formulation. The solution form of the medication is available in both the 2% and 5% strengths. Regardless of the form or strength, minoxidil is applied directly on the scalp twice daily, in the morning and evening. Although most people tolerate this nonprescription medication well, side effects may still occur and can include a dry, itchy, and flaky scalp.
