When using minoxidil for hair loss, the dose is the same for everyone. For treating male or female pattern hair loss, apply 1 mL of the liquid or half a capful of the foam to the hair-loss area twice daily, in the morning and evening. Men can use either the 2% or the 5% formulation; women should only use the 2% product.
An Introduction to Your Minoxidil DoseThere is only one standard recommended dosage of minoxidil (Rogaine®), although there are two different strengths available -- one for men only and one for men or women. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless a healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
(This article applies only to minoxidil formulations that are applied on the scalp. An oral form of minoxidil is available by prescription and is used to treat severe hypertension. Oral minoxidil should not be used to treat hair loss, as it can cause serious side effects. Click Loniten for more information.)
Minoxidil Dosing for Hair LossThe normal dose of minoxidil solution for treating hair loss is 1 mL applied to the affected area of the scalp twice daily, in the morning and the evening. Minoxidil solution should be spread evenly over the hair-loss area. If you use your hands to spread the medication, make sure to wash them immediately afterwards. Women should use minoxidil 2% products, while men can use either minoxidil 2% or 5% products.
Minoxidil solution should be applied with the included dropper or sprayer. The dropper will have a 1-mL mark for accurate dosing. Usually six pumps of the sprayer is equivalent to 1 mL.
