Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine®, a nonprescription medicine used to treat male or female pattern hair loss (known medically as androgenetic alopecia). This particular form of minoxidil comes as a liquid solution or foam, and is applied to the scalp twice daily to help stimulate hair growth. There is also an oral form of minoxidil (Loniten®) available by prescription and used to treat severe hypertension. But is there a generic minoxidil product available?
Minoxidil solution products have come off-patent and are available as generic products. However, minoxidil foam is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic versions from being manufactured in the United States. The first patent for Rogaine foam currently expires in April 2019. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version of minoxidil foam could become available.
The brand-name form of minoxidil oral used to be made by the Pharmacia and Upjohn Company; however, brand-name Loniten is no longer available. It is now only available in generic form.
