What Is Miconazole/Zinc Oxide/White Petrolatum Used For? -- An Overview
Miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum (
Vusion®) is an ointment used to treat diaper rashes complicated by a
yeast infection. It is available by prescription only. Miconazole/
zinc oxide/white petrolatum is approved for use in babies four weeks old and older. It is not approved for use in babies with immune system problems (in which case, more aggressive treatment may be necessary).
Miconazole/Zinc Oxide/White Petrolatum and Diaper Rashes
Diaper rashes are common, with most babies having diaper rashes at least occasionally. Even if you are very careful to change your baby's diapers frequently, moisture will still be in contact with your baby's skin for some period of time. This moistness, combined with irritation from urine or stool, irritating lotions or soaps, and chaffing from clothing or diapers, can quickly lead to a diaper rash. Usually, it is recommended to treat a diaper rash by keeping your baby's skin clean and dry, with frequent diaper changes. Non-prescription ointments and creams may also help protect the skin.
After a diaper rash begins to develop, bacteria or fungi can sometimes infect the irritated and broken skin. This can lead to a severe diaper rash that does not clear up quickly. Most often, a
yeast infection occurs, caused by infection with
Candida albicans -- the same yeast that usually causes vaginal yeast infections and thrush. In fact, many cases of diaper rash that last more than a few days are complicated by a yeast infection of the rash. If your child's diaper rash does not improve within three days, you might want to contact your child's healthcare provider, as a yeast infection may be possible.
