Based on clinical studies, it appears that side effects are unlikely with miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum (Vusion^®), a prescription diaper rash ointment. Studies compared the medication with a placebo ointment (an ointment without miconazole, the antifungal medication in miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum). Even though some side effects were reported in babies who used miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum ointment, these side effects were just as common in babies who used the placebo ointment.

 

Keep in mind that some apparent "side effects" of miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum ointment may actually be symptoms of the diaper rash itself. However, if you notice something that you think may be a side effect or anything that "just does not seem right," please do not hesitate to contact your child's healthcare provider. While it may not be a side effect of miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum, he or she will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
