The medication, which is available by prescription, should be applied to the affected area after every diaper change for seven days. You must apply miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum ointment on your child for a full seven days, even if the diaper rash improves.

In studies, there did not appear to be any real side effects associated with miconazole/zinc oxide/white petrolatum ointment. In other words, even though some side effects were reported in babies treated with the medication, these side effects occurred just as frequently in babies treated with a placebo ointment with no active ingredient.
