More Detail on Drug Interactions With Metronidazole Cream

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when metronidazole cream is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
The standard recommendation is that people taking metronidazole products, including metronidazole cream, not drink alcohol. However, this type of interaction is probably unlikely to occur when metronidazole is applied to the skin, such as with metronidazole cream, although this is not known for sure. In addition, there is some uncertainty about the validity of this interaction (see Metronidazole and Alcohol).

Amprenavir
Combining metronidazole cream with amprenavir oral solution (but not the other forms of amprenavir) can cause a dangerous interaction with metronidazole (the active ingredient in metronidazole cream). It is unclear whether this interaction applies to the skin formulations of metronidazole such as metronidazole cream, as only a small amount of the medication is absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. Check with your healthcare provider before using these medications together.
