Drug Interactions With Meperidine

Meperidine Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when meperidine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Acyclovir may increase the level of meperidine and normeperidine (the toxic metabolite of meperidine) in the blood. This may increase the risk of serious meperidine side effects. Check with your healthcare provider before taking acyclovir with meperidine.
Cimetidine may decrease the metabolism of meperidine into normeperidine. It is not clear how exactly this might affect the effectiveness or toxicity of meperidine. Check with your healthcare provider before taking meperidine with cimetidine, including non-prescription cimetidine products.
Taking meperidine with linezolid can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms include confusion, hallucination, fast heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sweating, muscle spasm, difficulty walking, and diarrhea. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be very dangerous.
Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Combining meperidine with any other medications that cause drowsiness can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking meperidine with such medications.
Additionally, combining meperidine with antidepressants may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Combining meperidine with an MAOI can cause life-threatening reactions. Do not use meperidine and an MAOI within 14 days of each other.
