No-Cost Preventive Medications

Pediatric Preventive Medications

For children, the following medications are covered with no co-pays:

  • Medicated eyedrops for newborns. These medications are recommended for all newborns to prevent gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum, a disease that can lead to blindness. All newborns are given these medications immediately after they are born. Because of the ACA, these necessary eyedrops will now be given at no charge.
  • Fluoride supplements for children without fluoride available in their water source.
  • Immunizations for children from birth to age 18.
  • Iron supplements for children age 6 to 12 months at risk for anemia.

Your Mileage May Vary

As is common with insurance matters, sometimes it's not exactly clear what will or will not be covered for a particular situation, even under the ACA. For instance, only immunizations that are recommended for your age and situation are covered, not all immunizations.

Each insurance company may be a little different, so be sure to call your company and verify that your prescription will be covered. Each state might be different, but every state will include zero co-pays for the medications explicitly required by the ACA. You will need a prescription to fill each of these medications in order to receive the zero co-pay.
