Drugs Home > Talwin Dosage
Available as an injection, Talwin is given every three to four hours. The injection can be given into a muscle, a vein, or just under the skin. It is usually administered by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting. Your specific Talwin dosage will depend on your age and weight, your response to the medicine, and various other factors.
The dose of Talwin® (pentazocine lactate) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on several factors, including:
- Your age
- Your weight (in children)
- How you respond to the medication
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
The usual recommended dosage of Talwin in most adults is 30 mg every three to four hours. The medication can be given as an injection into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, injection), a muscle (an intramuscular, or IM, injection), or beneath the skin (a subcutaneous, or SC, injection). However, it should only be given as an SC injection if absolutely necessary, as these injections can cause severe skin damage.
Single doses should not exceed 30 mg if given by IV, or 60 mg if given by IM injection. In addition, total daily doses should not exceed 360 mg, regardless of which form of injection is used.
The IM route of administration is preferred if frequent injections will be needed. The drug is normally injected into the muscle of the buttocks, thigh, or shoulder. The actual site of the injection should be changed with each dose.
If you use this medication regularly for extended periods, you may become tolerant to its pain-relieving effects. Let your healthcare provider know if Talwin stops working well to control your pain. He or she may need to adjust your dose or prescribe a different medication.
You could develop withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop using this medicine, especially if you have been using it on a regular basis. Your healthcare provider may need to gradually reduce your dose if you will no longer be using Talwin.
