PTU works by inhibiting the production of hormones in the thyroid. Specifically, this medication prevents the oxidation of iodine, an important step in the production of thyroid hormones. It also blocks the conversion of the less active form of thyroid hormone to the more active form.
Using PTU in Children
PTU is approved for children, but you should talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that this medicine should not be used in children (due to the risk of liver damage) unless the child is allergic or intolerant to methimazole and no other treatment options are available.
Veterinary Uses for PTU
Interestingly, PTU is sometimes used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats. However, as with humans, it has largely been replaced by methimazole, since methimazole usually has fewer side effects.
