Pravastatin (Pravachol®) is a medicine licensed for the treatment of high cholesterol and triglycerides. By decreasing the levels of these substances, the drug can also help prevent heart disease and other heart-related problems. It works by blocking the enzyme that controls the rate of cholesterol production in the body. Pravastatin tablets, which are available by prescription, come in brand-name and generic form. While most people tolerate this medication well, potential side effects include constipation, headache, and unexplained rash.
