The recommended dosage of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution will depend on your age and weight, among other factors. This laxative comes as a powder, which is dissolved in lukewarm water before using. This solution is typically swallowed in eight-ounce portions every 10 minutes. Depending on the particular product, it can take up to three or four liters of the solution to completely empty the bowels.

An Introduction to Dosing With Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Solution

The dose of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution (colyte®, GoLYTELY®, MoviPrep®, NuLYTELY®, TriLyte®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your weight (in children).
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Polyethylene Glycol Electrolyte Solution Dosage for Adults

The usual recommended adult dosage for cleansing the bowel prior to a colonoscopy or barium enema x-ray examination is eight ounces (240 mL) every 10 minutes until bowel movements are watery and clear, or the entire container is consumed. Each eight-ounce portion should be consumed as quickly as possible, instead of slowly over the 10-minute period.
For most products, three to four liters are needed to produce watery and clear stool. Certain polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution products (i.e., MoviPrep) only require two liters to be consumed. For these products, the usual dose is eight ounces every 15 minutes until one liter is consumed. The second liter is consumed in the same manner (eight ounces every 15 minutes) either 1½ hours later or the next morning, depending on your specific dosing instructions.
When using polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl (HalfLytely® and Bisacodyl), one bisacodyl 5-mg tablet is taken initially. After a bowel movement (or a maximum of six hours), two liters of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution are consumed by drinking eight-ounce portions every 10 minutes.
Some polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution products are approved for use with a nasogastric (NG) tube in people who are unwilling or unable to swallow the medication. The normal polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution dose for NG administration in adults is 20 to 30 mL per minute (1.2 to 1.8 liters per hour).
