Pantoprazole sodium ("pantoprazole") is a prescription drug used to treat conditions such as pathological hypersecretory diseases, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and erosive esophagitis. The medication works by reducing the amount of acid in your stomach. It belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Examples of common side effects associated with this medication include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain.

What Is Pantoprazole?

Pantoprazole sodium -- pantoprazole for short -- is a prescription medication that is used to treat a number of conditions within the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It is sold under the brand name Protonix®.

Possible Side Effects

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects associated with pantoprazole. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In most cases, side effects of pantoprazole are minor, meaning that they require no treatment or are easily treated by your healthcare provider.
Common side effects of pantoprazole include (but are not limited to):
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Insomnia
  • Rash
  • Burping
  • High sugar levels in the blood (hyperglycemia)

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Pantoprazole?

Before taking this medication, let your healthcare provider know if you:
  • Have liver disease or liver failure
  • Have low blood magnesium (hypomagnesemia) 
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have allergies.
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
