Drugs Home > What Is Olopatadine Ophthalmic Solution Used For?

Symptoms of eye allergies, such as stinging or burning, itchy eyes, or pink eye, can be treated with olopatadine ophthalmic solution. It works by blocking a certain histamine in the body. The medication is approved for adults and children as young as three years old. At this time, there are no off-label olopatadine ophthalmic solution uses.

Olopatadine Ophthalmic Solution Uses

Olopatadine ophthalmic solution (Patanol®, Pataday™) is a prescription eyedrop used for treating eye allergy symptoms. It belongs to a group of medications known as antihistamines. It comes in two forms: Patanol (used twice a day) or Pataday (used just once a day).
Allergies can affect various parts of the body, and symptoms are particularly common in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Eye allergies are known medically as allergic conjunctivitis, because the allergic reaction occurs in the conjunctiva (the thin layer that covers the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid). Symptoms of eye allergies may include:
  • Stinging or burning of the eyes
  • Watery, teary eyes
  • Red or pink eyes
  • Itchy eyes
  • Puffy, swollen eyelids.
Combined with strategies to minimize a person's contact with allergens, treatment can make life bearable for even the worst allergy sufferer. Treatment for allergies often includes eyedrops such as olopatadine ophthalmic solution. Unlike over-the-counter eyedrops, you can use olopatadine ophthalmic solution long-term without the risk of actually making the redness and swelling worse after you stop the medication.

How Does Olopatadine Ophthalmic Solution Work?

Olopatadine ophthalmic solution belongs to a group of allergy medications known as antihistamines. Specifically, it is an H1 receptor antagonist. This means that it blocks a specific type of histamine receptor in the body (known as H1 receptors). Because allergic reactions are partly caused by the release of histamine from certain cells in the body, olopatadine ophthalmic solution can help relieve or prevent allergy symptoms.
In addition to blocking histamine receptors, olopatadine ophthalmic solution seems to decrease the release of histamine from the cells in the body. This may also help prevent or relieve symptoms of eye allergies.
