A healthcare provider may prescribe metronidazole cream to treat rosacea. This medicated skin cream is applied to the skin twice daily. It contains an antibiotic, and may also have some immune-suppressing and anti-inflammatory properties. While most people tolerate this medicine well, side effects are possible and may include skin burning, redness, and itching.
What Is Metronidazole Cream?Metronidazole cream (MetroCream®) is a prescription rosacea medication. It comes as a cream that is applied directly on the skin twice a day.
Are There Side Effects?Just like any medicine, metronidazole cream may cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the skin cream will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
- Burning and stinging
- Skin irritation

- A history of low blood cell counts
- Any allergies, including to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives.
