Drugs Home > Fluocinonide Cream Side Effects

If you are using fluocinonide cream, side effects may occur and can include skin irritation, such as burning, stinging, and dryness. These types of reactions are usually minor and easily treated. However, make sure you are aware of the potentially serious problems, such as severe fluid retention, infections, and hallucinations, which require immediate medical care.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Fluocinonide Cream

Just like any medicine, fluocinonide cream (Lidex®, Vanos®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with fluocinonide cream. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Fluocinonide Cream Side Effects to Report

Some fluocinonide cream side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Glaucoma
  • Severe fluid retention
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) or diabetes
  • Infections
  • Ruptured tendons
  • Psychotic reactions, such as hallucinations or extreme aggression
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
In general, these serious reactions are unlikely to occur when fluocinonide cream is used as directed for a short period. However, applying too much of the medicine over too large an area, for too long, may increase the risk for serious steroid side effects.
