Omeprazole magnesium (Prilosec®) is a prescription medicine used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other conditions. Nonprescription omeprazole magnesium is also available; it is sold under the name Prilosec OTC® and is approved to treat frequent heartburn that occurs at least twice a week.
Omeprazole works by decreasing acid production in the stomach. In most cases, it is taken once or twice a day. Before you start using omeprazole, it is important to talk to your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, have liver disease, or have any allergies.
