Drugs Home > Buprenorphine Injection

The buprenorphine injection is a prescription medication that is injected into a muscle or given intravenously (by IV) to treat moderate-to-severe pain. As an opioid narcotic and controlled substance, this medication does have abuse potential. It works by binding to certain pain receptors in the body. Potential side effects of the drug may include nausea, drowsiness, and dizziness.

What Is Buprenorphine Injection?

The buprenorphine injection (Buprenex®) is an opioid narcotic used to treat moderate-to-severe pain. It is given by injection into a muscle (intramuscular injection) or by intravenous infusion (by IV).
The buprenorphine injection is a Schedule III controlled substance, which means there are strict laws and regulations controlling its use. Schedule III medications, such as the buprenorphine injection, are considered to have less potential for abuse, compared with Schedule II medications like morphine or oxycodone.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, a buprenorphine injection can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well.
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
Common side effects of the buprenorphine injection may include but are not limited to:
  • A drowsy, calm state (sedation)
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • A spinning sensation (vertigo).
