Lomustine Side Effects

As an older medication, lomustine has not been extensively studied to determine how often certain side effects might occur. However, most people who use it will develop some type of adverse reaction. Some of the commonly reported problems include nausea, mouth sores, and hair loss. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you are taking lomustine and experience fever, wheezing, or confusion, among other things.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Lomustine

As with any chemotherapy medicine, lomustine (CeeNU®) can cause side effects. In fact, most people will experience some type of reaction to this drug, and some side effects can be quite significant. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways to prevent or lessen reactions to this medicine.

Serious Lomustine Side Effects

Some side effects of lomustine are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
 
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
 
  • Signs of infection, such as:
 
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Aches and pains
    • Sore throat
    • Shortness of breath
    • Cough
 
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Black, tarry stools or blood in the urine
  • Signs of anemia, such as:
 
    • Extreme weakness or fatigue
    • Pale skin
    • Shortness of breath
    • Dizziness
 
  • Signs of liver problems, such as:
 
    • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
    • Dark urine
    • Pale stool
    • Upper-right abdominal (stomach) pain
 
  • Swelling of the legs, ankles, or feet
  • Shortness of breath, or a new or worsening dry cough
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Changes in vision, such as loss of vision or blurred vision
  • Mental confusion
  • Problems with coordination or balance
  • Problems with speech, such as difficult, slowed, or slurred speech.
