Cancer and Lomustine

Used to treat certain types of cancer, lomustine (CeeNU®) comes as capsules that are usually taken as a single dose once every six weeks. This prescription chemotherapy drug is approved for treating the following cancers:

  • Brain tumors in people who have already been treated with appropriate surgery and radiation therapy
  • Hodgkin's disease in people who did not improve or who have become worse after first-line treatment.

Lomustine is a type of alkylating agent and works by preventing DNA strands from separating, which is necessary for them to replicate. By preventing this replication of DNA, lomustine can help prevent cancer cells from growing and multiplying.

On occasion, a healthcare provider may prescribe lomustine to treat other forms of cancer, such as lung cancer, colon cancer, or breast cancer; however, these are unapproved ("off-label") uses for the medication.
