Lofibra Dosage

Lofibra Dosage for High Cholesterol

For people taking Lofibra tablets, the recommended starting dosage for high cholesterol, with or without high triglycerides, is 160 mg once a day. For people taking Lofibra capsules, the recommended starting dosage is 200 mg once a day.

Your healthcare provider will likely recommend that you return to recheck your cholesterol and triglyceride levels after several weeks. If you have not reached your cholesterol goals at this time, he or she may choose to add a new medication to your treatment.

Your healthcare provider may also decide to decrease your dose if a side effect occurs or if your cholesterol levels fall significantly below the targeted goal.

If you are over the age of 65 or have severe kidney disease, your healthcare provider may decide to start you on a lower dose, such as 67 mg once a day (for capsules) or 54 mg once a day (for tablets). If your cholesterol levels are not at the desirable level after several weeks, your dose may be increased only after the effects of Lofibra on your kidneys have been evaluated.

General Lofibra Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking Lofibra include:

  • Lofibra should be used in combination with lifestyle modifications. This includes a healthy diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats, limited alcohol use, weight loss, and exercise.

  • Lofibra should be taken with a drink of water during a meal.

  • Lofibra should be taken at the same time every day to help maintain an even level of medicine in the blood. Do not take it more often than directed.

  • If you are taking a bile acid sequestrant, make sure to take your Lofibra more than one hour before the bile acid sequestrant or more than four hours after. Bile acid sequestrants include:
o Cholestyramine (Prevalite®, Questran®, Questran Light®, LoCholest®)
  • If you forget to take a dose of Lofibra, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal dosing schedule. Never double your dose of Lofibra at one time.

  • For Lofibra to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Lofibra will not work if you stop taking it.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to Lofibra or your Lofibra dosage, please talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking Lofibra without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
