What Is Lenalidomide Used For?

Using Lenalidomide for Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Mantle cell lymphoma is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells (lymphocytes). It occurs when the lymphocytes begin to grow with no control or order.

There are many different types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and these types can generally be categorized based on the kind of lymphocyte affected. There are two main types of lymphocytes that can turn into lymphoma: B-lymphocytes (or B-cells) and T-lymphocytes (or T-cells). Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can also be categorized based on whether the cancer is indolent (slow-growing) or aggressive (fast-growing).

Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is an aggressive B-cell lymphoma. The cancerous cells in mantle cell lymphoma start in a certain area of the lymph node known as the mantle zone. The cancerous cells may spread to other areas of the body, including other lymph nodes, the bone marrow, and the digestive tract.

Lenalidomide is approved to treat mantle cell lymphoma in people whose disease has relapsed or gotten worse after two prior medications, one of which included bortezomib (Velcade®).

How Does It Work?

It is not entirely known how lenalidomide works. The medication is an immunomodulatory drug, which means it alters the actions of the immune system. The medication is thought to prevent or delay the growth of abnormal cells involved in multiple myeloma and MDS. It also blocks the growth of blood vessels around the cancer cells, which prevents the cancer cells from getting the nutrition they need to grow.

Can Children Use Lenalidomide?

Lenalidomide has not been adequately studied in people younger than 18 years of age, and is not approved for use in these younger age groups. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medication in children.
