Specifically, the prescription form of this medication is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and erosive esophagitis. The nonprescription form is approved to treat frequent heartburn.
 
Although most people tolerate lansoprazole well, there are some potential side effects of the medication, such as nausea, diarrhea, and headaches. Lansoprazole is not suitable for everyone.
