Precautions and Warnings With Ketoconazole Foam

Before prescribing ketoconazole foam, your doctor needs to know if you have any allergies or if you are pregnant or nursing. Other precautions for using ketoconazole foam safely include warnings about exposing the medicine to flames or high temperatures, as the foam is flammable. Also, tell your doctor if you develop new or different skin problems while using this product.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using ketoconazole foam (Extina®) if you:
  • Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Specific Ketoconazole Foam Precautions and Warnings

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this product include the following:
  • Ketoconazole foam can cause allergic reactions or other skin reactions, including reactions to the sun. Let your healthcare provider know if you have new or different skin problems while using this medication.
  • The foam is flammable. Avoid flames or smoking while applying the medication and immediately afterwards. Do not puncture the can or expose it to high temperatures.
  • Large oral doses of ketoconazole (the active ingredient in ketoconazole foam) can cause liver problems and hormonal imbalances, although these problems have not been seen with ketoconazole products applied to the skin like ketoconazole foam.
  • Ketoconazole foam is a pregnancy Category C medication. This means that it may not be safe for use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown (see Extina and Pregnancy).
  • It is unknown if ketoconazole foam is safe for use while breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to using this product (see Extina and Breastfeeding).
