Although ketoconazole foam is unlikely to cause dangerous reactions, it is important to seek medical attention if you are using this medication and develop signs of an allergic reaction or intolerable skin reactions. In most cases, side effects of ketoconazole foam are minor and easy to treat. Some of the common reactions include a burning sensation or other skin reactions at the application site.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Ketoconazole Foam

Just like any medicine, ketoconazole foam (Extina®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses this product will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with ketoconazole foam. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Ketoconazole Foam Side Effects to Report

In general, ketoconazole foam appears unlikely to cause serious side effects. However, as with any skin medication, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you experience any of the following potentially serious side effects:
  • Extreme skin irritation or other bothersome or intolerable skin reactions
  • Sensitivity to the sun
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling (especially of the lips, mouth, or throat)
    • Wheezing or other breathing problems.
Large oral doses of ketoconazole (the active ingredient in ketoconazole foam) can cause liver problems and hormonal imbalances, although these problems have not been seen with ketoconazole products applied to the skin like ketoconazole foam.
