Jantoven® (warfarin sodium) is likely to interact with many different medications, far too many to list here. In fact, there are more than 50 different categories of medications that interact with Jantoven (usually with many individual drugs within each category). In addition, this list of drug interactions is constantly growing and changing as more information becomes available.
It is good practice to assume that any medication or supplement (such as dietary or herbal supplements) can interact with Jantoven, unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you otherwise.
It should also be noted that Jantoven may interact with foods (see Coumadin Diet for more information).
Any time you start or stop taking any medication (prescription or non-prescription) or supplement, be sure to check with your healthcare provider. Extra monitoring may be necessary to see if your Jantoven dosage needs to be adjusted.
Don't worry about "bothering" your healthcare provider with frequent questions about Jantoven drug interactions. These interactions can lead to life-threatening consequences -- some decrease the effectiveness of Jantoven by increasing the risk of blood clots and strokes, while others increase the anticoagulant properties of Jantoven by increasing the risk of dangerous internal bleeding. Your healthcare provider will understand and appreciate the seriousness of possible drug interactions.
If you are on Jantoven, it is best to simply get used to the idea (and the process) of checking with your healthcare provider before making any medication changes. Unfortunately, this is one of several inconveniences associated with Jantoven therapy (it is also one of the reasons why researchers are diligently searching for a better alternative to the drug).
