Precautions and Warnings With Ingenol Mebutate

Let your healthcare provider know if you have a sunburn or any other skin problem before starting treatment with ingenol mebutate. In most cases, people using this skin gel will likely develop skin reactions, some of which can be severe. There are also important safety precautions and warnings with ingenol mebutate that apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using ingenol mebutate (Picato®) if you have:
  • A sunburn
  • Any other skin problems
  • Any allergies, including to medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
  • Being treated for actinic keratosis with surgery or other medications
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
In addition, tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Specific Ingenol Mebutate Warnings and Precautions

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this medicine include the following:
  • Ingenol mebutate usually causes skin reactions. These reactions can vary from a little redness to severe problems like painful ulcerations of the skin. Plan for the likely possibility that you will have a skin reaction. For instance, you may want to avoid using this medication right before a situation in which you will need to look your best.
  • Do not use ingenol mebutate on skin that is not fully healed from sunburn, surgery, or other treatments, including other medications.
  • This product is a pregnancy Category C medicine, meaning it might not be safe to use during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown (see Picato and Pregnancy for more information).
  • It is unknown if ingenol mebutate passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, check with your healthcare provider or your child's healthcare provider before using this medicine (see Picato and Breastfeeding).
