Ingenol Mebutate

When and How to Use This Medication

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with ingenol mebutate include the following:
 
  • For use on the face or scalp, the gel is applied once daily for three days in a row. For use on the trunk or extremities (arms and legs), the gel is applied once daily for two days in a row.
 
  • Wash your hands immediately after applying the medication. Be very careful to avoid getting any of the gel in your eyes.
 
  • Allow the gel to dry for 15 minutes after application. Try not to touch or wash the treated areas and try to avoid excessive sweating for six hours after applying ingenol mebutate.
 
  • If you accidentally touch the treated area within six hours, wash your hands right away; be very careful to avoid accidentally touching your eyes until you have washed your hands.
 
  • For ingenol mebutate to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

The dose of ingenol mebutate your healthcare provider recommends will depend mostly on the area(s) of the body being treated. As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What If I Overdose on This Medication?

Using too much of this medication may cause severe skin reactions. It is unknown what effects might be expected from accidentally taking the gel by mouth.
