Icatibant Side Effects

Some of the possible side effects of icatibant include fever, dizziness, and reactions at the injection site. Studies have shown that most people who use this drug tolerate it fairly well, however. In some cases, icatibant is associated with potentially serious problems, such as allergic reactions, so let your healthcare provider know immediately if you develop something that doesn't seem right.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Icatibant

As with any medicine, icatibant (Firazyr®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects

Icatibant has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people treated with icatibant were carefully documented and compared with the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people treated with a placebo (an injection with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.

In clinical studies, the most common icatibant side effects included:

  • Injection site skin reactions -- in up to 97 percent of people
  • Fever -- up to 4 percent
  • An increase in a certain liver enzyme called transaminase -- up to 4 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 3 percent.
