Gemfibrozil (Lopid®) is a medication often used to treat high cholesterol and high triglycerides. By lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels while raising HDL ("good cholesterol"), the drug can also help prevent conditions such as heart disease, angina, stroke, and heart attack. Gemfibrozil, which is available by prescription only, comes in tablet form and is generally taken twice a day. Side effects that have been reported with this medication include nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and muscle or joint pain.
