Gablofen Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Intrathecal baclofen (but not necessarily the Gablofen brand) has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people who received intrathecal baclofen were documented.
Because Gablofen is actually a generic version of Lioresal®, it is likely that the information available on potential side effects for Gablofen actually comes from clinical trials that used Lioresal, rather than Gablofen. However, keep in mind that no significant differences would be expected between the two products.
The most commonly reported side effects (with long-term use) included:
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia) -- in up to 34.7 percent of people
  • Drowsiness -- up to 20.9 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 10.7 percent
  • Seizures -- up to 10 percent
  • Dizziness -- up to 8 percent
  • Difficulty passing urine -- up to 8 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 7.3 percent
  • Unusual sensations, such as burning or tingling -- up to 6.7 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 5.1 percent.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the Gablofen side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while receiving Gablofen or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
