Side Effects of Fondaparinux

Some of the commonly reported side effects of fondaparinux include anemia, insomnia, and dizziness. These reactions are typically minor and easily treated. However, notify your healthcare provider right away if you notice more serious problems, such as blood in the urine, unusual bruising, or coughing up blood.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Fondaparinux

As with any medicine, fondaparinux sodium (Arixtra®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Fondaparinux Side Effects to Report

Some side effects with fondaparinux are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Most of these serious side effects are related to bleeding, an inherent risk with "blood-thinning" medications. Some of the warning signs of these serious side effects include:

  • Unusual headaches, dizziness, or weakness
  • Unusual bruising (bruises that develop without known cause or grow in size)
  • Blood in the urine
  • Blood in the stool (usually seen as red or black stools)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bleeding from cuts that takes a long time to stop
  • Menstrual bleeding or vaginal bleeding that is heavier than normal
  • Coughing up blood.

In rare cases, fondaparinux can cause dangerously low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) in a manner similar to heparin medications. This reaction is known as "heparin-induced thrombocytopenia" (HIT) when it occurs due to heparin, and some people call the fondaparinux version of this problem "fondaparinux-induced thrombocytopenia." It can be life-threatening and may cause extensive and serious blood clots.

If a person develops this problem due to fondaparinux, he or she should not take this medicine ever again. It is important to note that fondaparinux is not a heparin medication, and many people who have HIT can successfully take fondaparinux.
