When and How to Take Fluvastatin

Some general considerations for when and how to take fluvastatin include the following:
  • Fluvastatin sodium comes in a capsule. Fluvastatin extended-release comes in a tablet.
  • The capsules should be taken with the evening meal or right before bedtime. If you are taking two doses per day, the other dose can be taken in the morning. The extended-release tablets can be taken at any time of the day.
  • To maintain even levels of the medication in your body, make sure to take it at the same time(s) each day.
  • You can take fluvastatin with or without food.
  • Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with a drink of water.
  • For fluvastatin to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. The medication will not work if you stop taking it.

Dietary Instructions

There are no dietary restrictions for people taking fluvastatin. As with any cholesterol medication, you should continue to eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet as part of your program to lower cholesterol.

Dosing Information

The dose of fluvastatin your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • The medical condition being treated
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
