Fluticasone propionate ointment (Cutivate Ointment®) is a prescription skin medication used to treat inflammation and itching due to a wide variety of conditions. Such conditions include but are not limited to:

Specifically, fluticasone propionate ointment is approved to treat any skin condition that is responsive to corticosteroids (fluticasone propionate is a steroid). This is a very broad indication. As an ointment, this medication is somewhat greasy and may stain clothing. In many situations, Cutivate Lotion® or Cutivate Cream® may be more appropriate.

How Does It Work?

Fluticasone propionate ointment is part of a group of medications known as glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are a type of corticosteroid, or "steroid," for short. Although glucocorticoids have numerous effects in the body, they are used mostly for their anti-inflammatory or immune-suppressing properties. Fluticasone propionate ointment works for most conditions by decreasing inflammation or suppressing an overactive immune system.

Can Children Use Fluticasone Propionate Ointment?

Fluticasone propionate ointment is approved for use in adults. It has not been adequately studied in children. Fluticasone propionate ointment is not approved to treat diaper rash and should never applied to the diaper area, due to the increased risk of side effects. Children are at an increased risk for serious side effects of steroids.
