Fluocinonide Cream Side Effects

Long-Term Side Effects

Using steroids like fluocinonide cream over long periods can cause a different set of side effects. These reactions are most likely to be seen in people who use this medicine over a large area of the body for a long time. Some of the problems seen with long-term use might include:
  • Weight gain
  • Bulging eyes
  • Fluid retention
  • Osteoporosis
  • Loss of muscle
  • Fat deposits on the face and back, causing a round face and a fatty hump on back of the neck
  • Diabetes
  • Cataracts
  • Stunted growth (in children).
Keep in mind that these problems are more common with systemic steroids, which are taken by mouth or injection, and are probably quite rare with fluocinonide cream.

Common Fluocinonide Cream Side Effects

Fluocinonide 0.05% cream is an older medication. As is common with older medications, only vague information about potential side effects is provided in the prescribing information.
Based on this limited information, the most common reactions to fluocinonide cream (in decreasing order) include:
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Dryness
  • Irritation or infection of hair follicles of the skin (folliculitis)
  • Increased sweating
  • Acne
  • Loss of skin pigment (lightening of the skin)
  • Rash around the mouth
  • Allergic skin rash
  • Whitening and softening of the skin
  • Infection
  • Weakening and thinning of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • "Prickly heat" sweat rash (miliaria).
Fluocinonide 0.1% cream (Vanos) is a newer medication, with more detailed information available about possible side effects. Vanos has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Vanos, while another group was given a placebo (a cream that did not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In clinical trials, the most common problems with Vanos included:
  • Headaches -- in up to 4 percent of people
  • Burning at the application site -- up to 2.3 percent
  • Nasal congestion -- up to 1.4 percent.
In general, side effects are more common when a dressing, such as a bandage, is used to cover the medication. Do not use a dressing unless your healthcare provider specifically recommends that you do so.
