Fexofenadine Medicine for Allergies

Fexofenadine (
Allegra®) is a nonprescription antihistamine product that is approved for use in both adults and children. Although most people use fexofenadine medicine for allergies, it can also be used to treat chronic hives and itching.

When you come into contact with something you're allergic to, a chain reaction begins inside your body. During this chain reaction, specialized cells release histamine (a chemical that can cause sneezing, itching, and irritation). Fexofenadine works by blocking the effects of histamine, which helps relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, and nasal or throat itching.

While most people have no problems with fexofenadine, some people may experience side effects. Commonly reported ones include respiratory tract infections, coughing, and back pain.
