Healthcare providers often prescribe
fexofenadine (
Allegra®) for the treatment of seasonal
allergies. The medication is also approved to treat chronic hives and itching. It is available in several forms and strengths, including:
- 30 mg tablets
- 60 mg tablets
- 180 mg tablets
- ODT 30 mg (orally disintegrating) tablets
- Oral suspension, which contains 30 mg of medication per 5 mL or per teaspoonful.
Your healthcare provider will recommend a dosage for your situation based on several factors, including your age and the severity of your symptoms.
Adults and children over the age of 12 may start with either 60 mg
fexofenadine tablets (one tablet, twice daily) or 180 mg fexofenadine tablets (one tablet, once daily).
Younger children may need to take the orally disintegrating tablets or oral suspension. For children 2 to 11 years of age, the recommended dose is 30 mg twice a day (one teaspoonful of the oral suspension for those under six years old). For children six months up to two years old, the recommended dose is fexofenadine 15 mg (half a teaspoonful) twice daily.
