An Introduction to Fexofenadine Drug Interactions
Fexofenadine (
Allegra®) can potentially interact with a number of other medicines. Some possible fexofenadine drug interactions include:
- Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
- Erythromycin (Ery-Tab®, ERYC®, Erythrocin, E.E.S)
- Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium, such as Maalox® or Mylanta®
-
Fruit juices.
Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Taking ketoconazole and fexofenadine together may cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended. This can result in an increased amount of fexofenadine in your body. If you are taking these medications together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely or make necessary dosing adjustments.
Erythromycin (Ery-Tab, ERYC, Erythrocin, E.E.S)
Taking erythromycin and fexofenadine together may cause your body to metabolize the medicines differently than intended. This can result in an increased amount of fexofenadine in your body. If you are taking these medications together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely or make necessary dosing adjustments.
Aluminum or Magnesium Antacids (Maalox, Mylanta)
If you are taking both fexofenadine and antacids made with aluminum or magnesium, less fexofenadine may be absorbed into your body. When you are taking fexofenadine with antacids, take the antacids at least two hours before or two hours after taking the fexofenadine.
Fruit Juices
Taking fexofenadine with fruit juice can decrease the amount of fexofenadine absorbed into your body, possibly making it less effective. Fexofenadine should not be taken with fruit juice.
