Drug Interactions With Fentanyl Lozenge

Drug Interactions With Fentanyl Lozenges Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative reactions that can occur when a fentanyl lozenge is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Consuming alcohol while using a fentanyl lozenge could potentially increase your risk for serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Do not drink alcohol while using this medication.
Fentanyl lozenges may increase the risk for serious alvimopan side effects. You should not take alvimopan if you have used these lozenges in the past seven days.
Combining amphetamines with a fentanyl lozenge may increase the pain-relieving effects of the lozenge. Your healthcare provider may monitor you closely if you take these medications together. You might need a lower fentanyl lozenge dosage.
Beta Blockers
Using a fentanyl lozenge with a beta blocker may cause a decrease in your heart rate and blood pressure, potentially to unsafe levels. If you use these medications together, your healthcare provider may need to closely monitor your blood pressure and heart rate.
Calcium Channel Blockers
Using a fentanyl lozenge with certain calcium channel blockers may cause your heart rate and blood pressure to decrease, potentially to unsafe levels. Your healthcare provider may need to closely monitor your blood pressure and heart rate if you use these medications together.
CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down the fentanyl lozenge using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inducers) can increase the activity of these enzymes. Combining a fentanyl lozenge with one of these CYP 3A4 inducers may decrease the level of fentanyl in your body, making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely to make sure your pain is adequately controlled if you use a fentanyl lozenge with a CYP 3A4 inducer.
