Drug Interactions With Ezetimibe

Among the drugs that can potentially interact with ezetimibe are other fibrates (such as gemfibrozil), warfarin, colesevelam, and fenofibrate. Drug interactions with ezetimibe can change how your body metabolizes the drugs and alter the levels of ezetimibe in your blood, among other things. For example, taking ezetimibe along with cholestyramine can decrease the level of ezetimibe in your blood, which can affect its ability to lower cholesterol. Taking ezetimibe along with fenofibrate, on the other hand, can raise the level of ezetimibe in the blood, which can cause problems in people with gallbladder disease.

Fenofibrate (Antara, Tricor, Lipofen, Triglide, Lofibra)
Ezetimibe is often prescribed with fenofibrate because when combined, these medications are effective at lowering total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides -- as well as raising HDL cholesterol. However, taking both fenofibrate and ezetimibe together may increase the levels of ezetimibe in the blood. This can cause problems in people with gallbladder disease. In these cases, other cholesterol-lowering medicine may be recommended.
