Dosage of Ezetimibe

While the recommended dosage of ezetimibe is 10 mg once a day, there are a number of factors that may affect the dose your healthcare provider prescribes. Some of these factors include the medical condition you are being treated for, other medications you may be currently taking, and other medical conditions you may have. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist if you are unsure about anything related to ezetimibe or your dosage of the drug.

Other General Ezetimibe Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking ezetimibe include:

  • Your ezetimibe medication can be taken at any time during the day. However, it should be taken at the same time each day to maintain an even level of ezetimibe in your system. If you are taking ezetimibe with a statin or fenofibrate, you can take both medications at the same time of day.

  • Your ezetimibe dosage can be taken with or without food.

  • If you are taking a bile acid sequestrant, make sure to take your ezetimibe more than two hours before, or more than four hours after, the bile acid sequestrant. Bile acid sequestrants include:
o Cholestyramine (Prevalite®, Questran®, Questran Light®, LoCholest®)
  • Do not break, chew, or crush the ezetimibe tablets.

  • For ezetimibe to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Ezetimibe will not work if you stop taking it.

  • Remember that lowering cholesterol begins with lifestyle changes (including weight loss, a low-cholesterol diet, and exercise). If lifestyle changes alone do not lower cholesterol to a desirable level, cholesterol medication, such as ezetimibe, may be necessary. However, even people who are taking cholesterol medication need to make lifestyle changes to maintain a good cholesterol level.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to ezetimibe or your dosage of ezetimibe, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking ezetimibe without first discussing it with your healthcare provider.
