Oral Etoposide and Lung Cancer

Etoposide is a prescription medication used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of cancer. Specifically, oral etoposide capsules are approved to treat small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer rarely occurs in people who don't smoke. It is an aggressive cancer, growing and spreading rapidly in the body. In most cases, the cancer has spread beyond the lungs before it is detected, and therefore cannot be treated with surgery. Instead, chemotherapy is the usual form of treatment. Radiation treatment is also often recommended in addition to chemotherapy.

Etoposide works to treat lung cancer by interfering with the division process of DNA. By causing certain DNA strands to break, etoposide can help slow down the growth of cancer cells.
