Etoposide Mechanism of Action

Etoposide is a prescription medicine used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to treat certain types of cancer. Depending on the particular form of the medication being used, this drug can help treat small cell lung cancer or testicular cancer in adults.

Etoposide works by blocking the action of a certain enzyme known as topoisomerase II. By blocking topoisomerase II, etoposide prevents it from relaxing DNA and causing the DNA strands to break. This prevents cells from dividing, which stops the growth of cancer cells.
