Esomeprazole Drug Interactions

Potential drug interactions with esomeprazole may involve medications such as digoxin and diazepam. For people taking esomeprazole, drug interactions may also occur with ketoconazole and warfarin. While the following article lists some of the more common potential drug interactions involving esomeprazole, it's possible that interactions may occur with other medications not discussed here.

Esomeprazole Drug Interactions: An Overview

Esomeprazole (marketed under the brand name Nexium®) potentially has a number of other medicines with which it can interact. Some of these common esomeprazole drug interactions may involve the following:

  • Atazanavir (Reyataz®)

  • Diazepam (Valium®)

  • Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxin®, Lanoxicaps®)
  • Iron salts
  • Ketoconazole (Nizoral®)
  • Voriconazole (Vfend®)

  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).

Atazanavir (Reyataz)
Esomeprazole can decrease the level of atazanavir in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to increase your atazanavir dose.

Diazepam
When taking esomeprazole with diazepam, your body may metabolize the medicines differently than intended, although this potential interaction is not believed to be significant in most cases. You may wish to discuss this with your healthcare provider, prior to starting esomeprazole.

Digoxin
If you are taking esomeprazole and digoxin, your body may metabolize the medications differently than intended. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your progress closely.
