Precautions and Warnings With Ecallantide

If you have any allergies or are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your healthcare provider before undergoing treatment with ecallantide. This drug may not be suitable for everyone, so before starting treatment, be sure you understand the drug's safety precautions and warnings. Ecallantide should be avoided by anyone who is allergic to any of the medicine's ingredients.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to receiving ecallantide (Kalbitor®) if you have:
  • Ever had an allergic reaction to ecallantide
  • Any allergies, including to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Specific Ecallantide Precautions and Warnings

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of prior to using this medication include the following:
  • It is possible to have a serious allergic reaction to ecallantide; therefore, ecallantide is administered by a healthcare provider who can appropriately treat an allergic reaction.
  • There are no known drug interactions between ecallantide and other medications; however, no formal studies have been done to see if there are drug interactions between ecallantide and other medications (see Drug Interactions With Ecallantide).
  • It is unknown if ecallantide passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this with your healthcare provider prior to using the drug (see Kalbitor and Breastfeeding).
  • Ecallantide is a pregnancy Category C medication. This means it may not be safe to use during pregnancy (see Kalbitor and Pregnancy).
