In people with
hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Tapazole
® (
methimazole), a prescription drug, is used to treat this condition. The medicine comes in the form of a tablet and is typically taken three times a day. Possible side effects include
headache, nausea, and hair loss; however, most people tolerate it well.
The medicine disrupts the production of thyroid hormone by preventing the oxidation of iodine; however, it does not affect hormones that are already circulating in the bloodstream. Because Tapazole may not be suitable for everyone, talk to your healthcare provider before starting treatment to make sure this drug is right for you. Your healthcare provider will need information on the medications you are currently taking (including nonprescription drugs and supplements) and whether you have any other medical conditions.
