Sinecatechins Drug Information

When used for treating external genital or perianal warts, sinecatechins (Veregen®) is thought to work by activating the body's own immune system. It is the first botanical prescription drug approved in the United States and is made from green tea leaf extract.

Sinecatechins comes as an ointment that is applied to the affected areas three times a day. It can be used until the warts are gone, but no longer than 16 weeks. Some people who use this medicine will experience side effects, such as pain, itching, and burning of the skin.

Although this product may help in the treatment of these warts, not everyone can use this drug. Information on sinecatechins should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to minimize your risk for certain complications. For instance, people who have problems with their immune system or who have certain allergies may not be able to safely use it.
