PTU Drug Information

PTU (propylthiouracil) is a thyroid medication that is available by prescription only. It is specifically used to treat an overactive thyroid (known medically as hyperthyroidism).

Because this product carries the risk of serious liver problems, its use is generally reserved for people who cannot use other treatments (such as methimazole) or for women in their first trimester of pregnancy. The medication comes in tablet form and is usually taken three times a day.

Because PTU is not suitable for everyone, it's important to review the safety information for this drug with your healthcare provider before starting treatment. For example, make sure your healthcare provider is aware of any other health issues you may have, such as liver disease or a bleeding disorder.
