Propoxyphene Hydrochloride Drug Information

Propoxyphene hydrochloride (Darvon®) is a prescription narcotic used to treat pain in adults. This medicine comes in the form of a capsule and is taken every four hours as needed. However, it is important to not take more than 6 capsules in a 24-hour period.
 
Before starting treatment with propoxyphene hydrochloride, make sure your healthcare provider has all of your health information, including any other drugs you are taking and any other medical problems you may have. You may not be able to use this pain reliever safely if you are taking certain medications or if you have certain health conditions, such as depression or a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
 
Most people tolerate this medicine well. When side effects do occur, they are generally mild and are easily treated. Some of the most common side effects include dizziness, nausea, and drowsiness.
